The heart of winter in Georgia is January. Its when we historically have seen our coldest air and most snow and ice. When we get past this month, the severity of the season weakens. Right now I see no surprises in the near future just a wild ride with temps and a threat of rain..no snow or ice!

The latest from the Climate Prediction Center has North Georgia in a better than average chance to see above normal temperatures this month. The average high for Atlanta is 52 and the low is 34. This is not to suggest that everyday will be mild to warm. But overall, the month should be mild with sharp cold swings only lasting a few days.

As far as rain, the recent projection is for near normal rainfall, which is great news during a La Nina winter. The average January rainfall for Atlanta is 4.20". If we receive that, our drought situation is certain to improve.

While the 90 day outlooks are also out, I do not put a lot of stock in them. Seasonal forecasts often bust, especially when there is no consistency from run to run. Peace.
