The largest body of water in our state is slowly getting larger. The latest level on Lake Lanier is now above 1063, the highest its been since September of 2011. That mark is 7 feet below full winter pool of 1070 and just 4 feet from the average mark for mid Feb. of 1067.
With more rain in the forecast, the level is certain to rise and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers predicts a rise of two feet by mid March. That is great news as this is the winter/spring recharge period (Feb thru April) and the expectation is for the level to rise during these months.
Speaking with hydrologists and other forecasters, if the level at Lanier can reach 1067 by summer, we would be in great shape through the recreation season and the hot summer months when water demand is the greatest. Our other area lakes, West Point, Allatoona, Hartwell, and Thurmond are doing very well this winter. Peace.
