The weather in North Georgia in 2011 was highlighted by three events: Snowmagdeon in January, several dates of tornadoes in both the spring and fall, and the reappearance of the drought. While the snow in January truly showed how ill prepared we are for drastic winter weather, it was the tornadoes that top my list.
With the recent of update of a tornado in Gilmer county earlier this week, the total for twisters this year stands at 30. The National Weather Service at Peacthree City is in charge of 96 counties, most of North and Central Georgia. This is the third highest total they have ever recorded. 38 tornadoes in 2008 is the top mark.
For a comprehensive look at the tornado story nationwide, here is a link to a great post by Dr. Jeff Masters. Good stuff.
