Honestly, how many of you at the start of this season believed Georgia Tech and Georgia would have any chance of meeting on Nov. 26 at Bobby Dodd Stadium with both teams 9-2?
It's very possible, and if it does happen, both teams will enter the game with 9 or more wins for the first time since 1942.
The way the Bulldogs started this season (0-2), no one would have predicted they would win nine consecutive games going into their annual clash with Tech.
The Yellow Jackets weren't even ranked to start the season, so it's highly doubtful anyone believed Paul Johnson's team would fly through the ACC's Coastal Division to win nine of its 11 ballgames.
But with three weeks left before they tussle in Atlanta, the Bulldogs and Jackets are both in position to win their respective conference divisions (SEC East and ACC Coastal) and have their annual matchup serve as each team's final tuneup before heading off to the conference championship game.
There have been other years where both teams have been very good, such as 1946 when the Bulldogs went 11-0 and won the national championship, while the Yellow Jackets were 9-2; but Tech was 8-1 going into the game at Georgia and lost 35-7 before finishing with a 41-19 victory over St. Mary's in the Oil Bowl (no, I'm not making that up) in Houston.
There was also the 1966 season, which happened to be the last time Tech started 6-0 before this year. That particular season saw the Yellow Jackets finish 9-2, and the Bulldogs were 10-1 on their way to an SEC championship. But UGA was 8-1 going into their matchup that year, the Jackets were 9-0 before losing their final two (to the Dawgs and Florida in the Orange Bowl.)
Tech fans will certainly point out the 1990 season, when the Yellow Jackets won their last national title. That year, they did indeed go into Athens 9-0-1 before winning 40-23 over the Bulldogs and 45-21 over Nebraska in the Citrus Bowl to stake their claim to the title they shared with Colorado.
Other than that, that's it since the 1940s.
Due to the much longer schedules in recent years, the only other time either team went into its showdown with 9 or more wins was 1927, when UGA went in 9-0 only to lose to Tech in Atlanta, yet the Bulldogs still claimed the national championship. That same year, Tech finished 8-1-1 and was crowned Southern Conference champion.
So here's hoping the Yellow Jackets can take care of business against Virginia Tech at home on Nov. 10 and Duke on the 19th, and the Bulldogs can sweep through New Mexico State, Auburn and Kentucky between the hedges.
Because if that happens, the Saturday after Thanksgiving we'll all be treated to a helping-of-a-game that hasn't been this tasty in a very long time.
