Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologists Brad Nitz and Karen Minton were on hand at two metro Atlanta Kroger stores Saturday to help Georgians program their weather radios.

Nitz stopped by Kroger at 1000 Whitlock Avenue in Marietta, while Minton visited Kroger on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.

Both Nitz and Minton answered questions from shoppers, WSB-TV viewers and assisted with the programming of radios for specific counties.

"A lot of great people came out to meet Severe Weather Team 2 and pick up their weather radios," said Midland Radio's Bruce Thomas. "We want to make sure this device can help save Georgian's lives during severe weather."

One of the main questions from people was, "Where’s the best place to leave your weather radio?"

Experts said you should treat your weather radio as if it was a fire alarm -- change the batteries twice a year and put it in the central part of your home.

Cobb County Emergency Management officials were also on hand at the event in Marietta, handing out emergency action guides and disaster preparedness information.

Officials said when it comes to severe weather, people should plan ahead to protect their family, keep a proper first aid kit handy and have other important items on hand during a crisis, learn how to turn your home into a safe shelter and keep plenty of water and food stocked for emergencies.

"We're always excited and willing to be part of any activity to help Georgian's prepare for severe weather emergencies," said Lanita Lloyd, Deputy Director of the Cobb County Emergency Management Agency.
