A landslide has closed U.S. Highway 30 in Oregon in both directions.
The highway is closed at mile post 67, about five miles west of Clatskanie, Ore.The Oregon Department of Forestry requested that the Oregon Department of Transportation close the highway after Eilertsen Creek became clogged with a large amount of debris that officials said could lead to a slide in the area, reported KPTV in Portland, Ore.The highway is closed until further notice. On Saturday, President George W. Bush declared a federal disaster for 11 counties in the Northwest region, allowing aid to flow into Oregon and Washington as the area recovers from last weekend's storms. The federal government will reimburse 75 percent of the public cost for the disaster response and will provide funds for preventative measures, such as burying utility lines. It does not provide money to individuals. FEMA said more assistance could be granted as floodwaters recede and officials get a better look at the damage. Oregon and Washington saw flooding, landslides and mudslides triggered by storms that hit the coast from Dec. 1-3. Eight deaths are blamed on the weather.
