Malibu Wildfire 97 Percent Contained

More Than 14,000 People Evacuated

Saturday, November 24, 2007 – updated: 11:17 pm EST November 26, 2007

The wildfire that burned more than 50 homes in Malibu is nearly under control.

The fire is 97 percent contained, and full containment is expected by Tuesday.

Fifty-three homes were lost, but officials said it could have been worse if not for the preparations and a lucky break in the weather.

Fire officials routinely position crews in advance when hot, dry Santa Ana winds are forecast.

But fires last month in Southern California destroyed nearly 2,200 homes and burned 800 square miles. But just six homes, two businesses and a church burned down in Malibu in those fires.
