Monorail Opening Delayed Until Summer
Testing Not Complete On Mass-Transit Project
Sorry, folks, but you're going to have to wait a while longer to stop taking cabs around Las Vegas.
Officials with the Las Vegas Monorail have announced another delay in the opening of the $650 million mass-transit project, now slated to become operational sometime this summer.
When complete, the monorail system will zip passengers from the MGM Grand to the Sahara in about 15 minutes, with stops at Bally's & Paris, The Flamingo, Imperial Palace and Harrah's, the Las Vegas Convention Center, and the Las Vegas Hilton.
Whether it was ever official or not, it was widely reported that operators wanted to have the thing up and running by the beginning of this year. Testing requirements delayed that opening until "around March" and now the even more vague summer target. Officials and representatives for the monorail system say the delays are to ensure that they have prepared for every contingency, working out any bugs before the high-tech system opens as opposed to having it break after people are already on board.
Part of that testing process will be to run the driverless trains 24 hours a day and attempting to over-stress each part of the system, from ticket purchase to disembarking. If you happen to be in Vegas in the next couple of months and see the trains running, don't get excited: This is a test; this is only a test.
The delay in the main-line project does not mean a delay in the downtown extension, however. Work on the $450 million line running from the Sahara station, past the Stratosphere and up to Fremont Street is expected to begin this year, with a targeted 2007 completion date.
