Fatal Crash Shuts Down I-20 East

A double fatal wreck closed down I-20 eastbound in Newton County Thursday morning.

The crash happened on the interstate east of state road 11 at exit 98 just before 9 a.m.

Two people were killed in the crash, according to the Conyers Police Department.

News Chopper 2 flew over the scene and it appeared a red car was hit on the passenger side by a white pickup truck.

The Georgia State Patrol confirmed there was one person in each vehicle and they were both pronounced dead on the scene.

Early investigation shows a Ford Taurus was traveling west on I-20 when the driver crossed the median and a Nissan pickup truck struck the car, according to the GSP. It is unknown why the Taurus came across the median.

Vehicles are being directed to use exit 98 onto state road 11 and then onto US 278. They will be able to rejoin the interstate at exit 101.
