Monfils Upends Gonzo In Vienna

Friday, October 10, 2008

(Sports Network) - French Open semifinalist Gael Monfils ousted Olympic silver medalist Fernando Gonzalez during Friday's quarterfinal action at the $930,000 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy.

The eighth-seeded Monfils toppled the second-seeded "Gonzo" in 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) fashion at Wiener Stadthalle. The Chilean Gonzalez reached the final here in 2006.

Another upset of a Fernando came when German Philipp Kohlschreiber took out fifth-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, 6-2, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Spain's Feliciano Lopez overcame heavy Austrian crowd favorite and fellow lefthander Jurgen Melzer 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and German qualifier Philipp Petzschner dismissed former world No. 1 Spaniard Carlos Moya 6-4, 6-2. Lopez captured this event back in 2004.

Saturday's semifinals will pit the French Monfils against Kohlschreiber and Petzschner versus Lopez.
