Mauresmo Wins Moscow Opener

Monday, October 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - Former world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo was among Monday's first-round winners at the $1.34 million Kremlin Cup.

The two-time major champion Mauresmo came from behind to beat fellow Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-4 on the indoor carpet at Olympic Stadium. Mauresmo reached a final here five years ago.

In other opening-day play, Russian wild card Vera Dushevina edged out struggling Czech Nicole Vaidisova 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 and rising Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova drubbed France's Marion Bartoli 6-1, 4-1, as Bartoli retired in the second set.

This week's top seeds are world No. 1 Serbian Jelena Jankovic, Russian favorites Dinara Safina and Elena Dementieva, and another Serb, Ana Ivanovic. Jankovic, fresh off her back-to-back titles in Beijing and Stuttgart, respectively, was this year's U.S. Open runner-up, while Safina reached finals at the French Open and Olympic Games, Dementieva captured a gold medal in Beijing, and Ivanovic ran the table at Roland Garros and was the runner-up at the Aussie Open. Dementieva defeated Serena Williams in last year's marquee Moscow finale.

Jankovic, who received an opening-round bye this week, will open her stay here against the aforementioned Dushevina, while Safina will meet Mauresmo and Ivanovic will encounter Cibulkova.

This week's field also features Wimbledon champ Venus Williams, who is seeded sixth.

The 2008 Moscow titlist will earn $196,900.
