Ferrero, Verdasco Advance In Vienna

Monday, October 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - Former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero and fifth-seeded Fernando Verdasco were a pair of Spanish winners Monday at the $930,000 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy.

An unseeded Ferrero toppled fourth-seeded Croat Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), while Verdasco vaulted past Romanian qualifier Victor Crivoi 6-4, 6-4 at Wiener Stadthalle.

Two more Spaniards moved on, as Feliciano Lopez snuck past Argentine Agustin Calleri 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4) and another former world No. 1, Carlos Moya, edged out German Michael Berrer 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6). Lopez titled here in 2004.

In other opening-round action, Argentine Guillermo Canas handled Italian Andreas Seppi 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 and Czech qualifier Jan Hernych came back to best Croat Roko Karanusic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

This week's top seeds are Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, Olympic silver medalist Fernando Gonzalez of Chile and rising Argentine star Juan Martin del Potro. Wawrinka was last year's Vienna runner-up to Serb Novak Djokovic, who is not defending his title this week. Del Potro was a finalist in Tokyo last week.

The 2008 titlist here will collect $187,000.
