Posted: 11:41 am EDT June 20, 2007
When Steve Jobs announced the iPhone earlier this year, he touted its ability to bring the full Web to users' phones.Tuesday, Apple announced that one more popular service will be available -- video clips from YouTube. The company also said the clips can be sent -- starting right away -- to Apple TV devices. For the iPhone, Apple had to create its own YouTube application. YouTube will have to encode its videos in Apple's favored H.264 standard.Apple said more than 10,000 videos will be available when the phone goes on sale June 29, and the full catalog should be available by this fall.
YouTube Goes Global
YouTube announced it is going global. The online video leader is expanding beyond the U.S. by programming new channels in nine other countries.New YouTube sites will be available in Brazil, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the U.K. The Web sites will be translated into the native languages of each country when necessary and allow YouTube to highlight videos that appeal to their respective audiences.YouTube says it streams more than 200 million videos each day.The expansion could deliver new challenges for Google's YouTube as it tries to adhere to the laws and community standards of other nations.
