ABC's high-definition (HDTV) programming will be available to more than 700,000 Comcast customers in metropolitan Atlanta through Comcast Cable's HDTV service, beginning Friday, January 28, 2005, at 8 a.m.

Available on Comcast Channel 803, Comcast HDTV customers in metro Atlanta will now have access to a variety of HDTV programming from WSB-TV and ABC.

ABC loads its primetime schedule with weekly HDTV broadcasts, including the new hit shows “Desperate House-wives” and “Lost,” plus the upcoming 77th Academy Awards presentation on Sunday, Feb. 27.

Next season, ABC plans a full roster of HDTV sports presentations, including the NFL on "Monday Night Football" and Super Bowl 2006.

Upcoming ABC theatrical movies broadcast in high-definition include Catch Me If You Can, The Count of Monte Cristo, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, K-PAX, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Minority Report, The Ring, Signs, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

“We are very pleased to bring the HDTV experience to our cable viewers served by Comcast Cable,” said Greg Stone, vice president and general manager for Channel 2, WSB-TV and WSB-DT. “Channel 2 led the Atlanta market when WSB-DT signed on in 1998 and began broadcasting its over the air digital signal free to the public. As ABC and Channel 2 continue to add new programming in HDTV, more and more local viewers have expressed how much it increases their enjoyment of television,” Stone continued.

"We couldn’t be more excited about partnering with WSB-TV in bringing ABC high-definition programming to our customers here in Atlanta," said Reg Griffin, vice president of communications and community affairs for the Comcast Southern Division. “Comcast is a leader in delivering advanced entertainment services, and this agreement to carry Channel 2’s HDTV programming underscores our ongoing commitment to bringing customers TV on their terms: what they want to watch, the way they want to watch it.”

WSB-TV led the industry in committing to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that the station would sign-on digital television in 1998. The station hit its target date when, on April 17, 1998, it signed on WSB-DT in a new state of the art digital facility at 1601 West Peachtree St. In doing so, WSB-DT became the first station in Georgia, and among a handful in the nation, to lead the industry into the digital age of television and the enhanced quality of high definition broadcasting.

Channel 2 made the record books again when the “Salute 2 America” parade became the first local live telecast in HDTV on Sunday, July 4, 2004.
