Tonight on ABC: 20/20-Teflon Report
Posted: 3:38 p.m. EST November 14, 2003
The news magazine show 20/20, which airs Friday night at 10 p.m. on ABC and WSB-TV/Channel 2, has compelling reports about a household danger and an update on the condition of actor Christopher Reeve.
Brian Ross, the show's chief investigative correspondent, reports that a chemical used in the manufacture of teflon, a popular household helper found on frying pans, in cosmetics and carpets, has been linked to cancer and organ defects in lab animals.
For the first time, two mothers who worked at a DuPont plant in Parkersburg, W.V., where Teflon is manufactured, talk to Ross about their children's birth defects. Ross reports that the federal government is looking into why DuPont did not report the birth defects to the government at the time. DuPont says it did not report the birth defects because it found nothing to connect birth defects to the Teflon chemical.
And Barbara Walters talks with actor Christopher Reeve who, for the first time, demonstrates the results of a remarkable -- and experimental -- surgical procedure that allows him to breathe for hours at a time without the help of a ventilator.
Walters has interviewed Reeve several times since the tragic accident eight years ago that led to his paralysis, and she asks him, once again, whether he still believes he will walk again.
