Top performances from Week 5: North Oconee's Bryant closes on Chubb in rushing race

Don’t concede the state’s rushing title to Nick Chubb just yet.

North Oconee junior Kawon Bryant is gaining ground after a school-record 368 yards last week against Athens Christian. That doubled his rushing output for the season, putting him a 736. That’s 245.3 yards per game.

Chubb, the senior from Cedartown, has 989 overall, but in four games for an average of 247.3.

*Cherokee junior QB Spencer Ashley was 23-of-32 passing for 455 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-41 loss to Lassiter. WR Blace Brown had 12 catches for 175 yards and a touchdown.

*B.E.S.T. Academy RB Deshawn Waller rushed for 292 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries and intercepted a pass in a 62-7 victory over McNair.

*Clarkston PK Santino Jerke made a 55-yard field goal in a 42-10 loss to Decatur. Jerke made a 52-yarder last season.

*Locust Grove FS Emilio Conde scored two touchdowns, intercepted two passes and had eight solo tackles in a 27-21 overtime victory against Spalding. Conde had his spleen removed three months ago after being injured in a seven-on-seven event.

*North Oconee RB Kawon Bryant rushed for 368 yards and five touchdowns on 28 carries in a 56-0 victory over Athens Christian.

*Arabia Mountain LB Kayton Samuels had two sacks, three other tackles for losses and forced three fumbles in a 26-20 overtime victory over Miller Grove.

*Baldwin QB Tajhea Chambers passed for 241 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 83 yards in a 41-7 victory over Howard.

*B.E.S.T. Academy RB/LB Rontavious Belcher rushed for 94 yards and had two sacks on defense in a 62-7 victory over McNair.

*Calhoun DE Austin Byrd had four sacks for 25 yards in losses in a 38-0 victory over Dade County.

*Cartersville QB Brooks Barden was 14-of-16 passing for 312 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for two scores in a 55-15 victory over North Murray.

*Cedartown RB Nick Chubb rushed for 257 yards and three touchdowns on 37 carries in a 36-14 victory over Ridgeland.

*Christian Heritage QB Trevor Brown threw five touchdowns passes in a 41-0 victory over Fellowship Christian. He was 15-of-24 passing for 310 yards.

*Eagle’s Landing QB Bradley Dewberry was 14-of-23 passing for 206 yards and a touchdown in a 36-19 victory over Jonesboro. Dewberry also rushed for 54 yards, scored two touchdowns, made five tackles and intercepted a pass, returning it 40 yards.

*Etowah RB Brandon Engle rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown in a 31-14 victory over Wheeler.

*Gainesville QB Deshaun Watson passed for 372 yards in a 49-6 victory over Apalachee. WR Jay Gaudlock had nine catches for 149 yards.

*Liberty County freshman DB/ATH Richard LeCounte scored touchdowns on a 37-yard reception (his only play on offense), 53-yard interception return and 45-yard fumble return in a 49-0 victory over Cross Creek. He had 5.5 tackles.

*Johnson County QB Michael Taylor rushed for 209 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries and passed for 67 yards and a touchdown in a 26-6 victory against Savannah Country Day.

*Lovett DB/RB Grant Haley had a team-leading six tackles, forced a fumble, rushed for 87 yards on seven carries and scored two touchdowns in a 28-7 victory over St. Pius. RB Jay Harris rushed for 160 yards.

*Luella OLB Steve Osondu had nine total tackles, a school-record 4.5 for losses, broke up a pass and made a game-sealing interception in a 24-21 victory over Henry County. Osondu has 22.5 career tackles for losses, which breaks a school record held by Georgia State DL Tevin Jones.

*Macon County LB/WR Roquan Smith had 16 tackles, two for losses, and caught eight passes for 121 yards and scored a touchdown in a 17-14 loss to Peach County.

*McEachern QB Ty Clemons rushed for 135 yards on nine carries and was 9-of-12 passing for 212 yards and three touchdowns in a 43-30 victory over Marietta.

*Model LB Justin Nelson had 15 tackles, three for losses, and a fumble recovery in a 15-7 victory over Chattooga.

*Monroe Area RB Kwan Brooks rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries in a 49-0 victory over Lumpkin County.

*Mundy’s Mill RB Rodney Smith rushed for 157 yards on 22 carries in an 18-14 loss to Coffee.

*North Gwinnett QB Hayden Sphire threw six TD passes in a 63-0 victory over Meadowcreek. Sphire completed 12 of 15 passes for 201 yards in two quarters.

*Peachtree Ridge RB Jordan Ellis rushed for 143 yards and scored three touchdowns in a 31-30 victory over Mill Creek.

*Rabun County WR Alden Wight had 12 receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown in a 28-0 victory over Commerce.

*Shiloh RB Charles Shavers rushed for 222 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries in a 21-14 victory over South Gwinnett.

*Sonoraville QB Cody Long rushed for 188 yards on 23 carries and scored five touchdowns in a 41-16 victory over Coahulla Creek.

*Stephenson DE Chauncey Rivers had six tackles for losses, including two sacks, in a 42-0 victory over Lakeside of Atlanta.

*Upson-Lee DB/KR Toby Fuentes returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and intercepted two passes in a 34-13 victory over Central of Macon.

*Villa Rica LB Jarred Weaver had 24 tackles, five for losses, in a 20-17 overtime victory over Paulding County.

*Warner Robins RB Jaquan Burns rushed for 193 yards in a 34-14 victory over Douglas County.

*Washington-Wilkes sophomore RB Jaquavious “Quay” Blackburn, rushed for 230 yards on 12 carries, scored on runs of 74 and 75 yards and intercepted a pass in a 50-14 victory over Riverside Military.

*Woodward Academy FS Arrington Farrar had 19 tackles and an interception in a 30-15 victory over Westminster. QB Terry Googer rushed for 190 yards and passed for 94.
