Seven Georgia teams earn spot in national rankings

ATLANTA — Seven Georgia schools can be found in national rankings as the 2013 season is set to kick off.

Norcross, Georgia’s Class AAAAAA champion in 2012, heads the list with six top-six rankings, peaking at No. 2. Sandy Creek is as high as No. 5 in one poll.

Norcross will play Booker T. Washington of Miami, the No. 1-ranked team in USA Today, on Saturday in a home game televised by ESPN.

Norcross coach Keith Maloof told GHSF Daily on Tuesday that talk of a national title is fun, but it’s not a tangible goal.

“It would be fun for the community and for the school, but in reality, we don’t have control over that,” Maloof said. “We don’t have a playoff system. We could go 15-0 and end up No. 16 in a national poll like last year. What we do have control over is what we do in our region and the state of Georgia. It so happens that if we play really good this weekend and do it the rest of year, we have a chance. But right now, it’s one game at a time.”
