Tigers' Maroth To Undergo Elbow Surgery

Posted: 2:24 pm EDT June 1, 2006

(Sports Network) - Detroit Tigers pitcher Mike Maroth will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Friday to remove bone chips in his left elbow.

The bone chips were found in tests done by Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim team doctor Lewis Yocum. Maroth saw Yocum in an attempt to find the source of pain in his elbow that had been bothering him all season and flared badly when the Tigers were in Kansas City last week.

The procedure is expected to keep Maroth out of action until late July at the earliest.

Detroit placed Maroth on the 15-day disabled list last Friday after he was hammered for six runs on six hits in just one-third of an inning in his start against the Royals. Detroit did rally to win the game, 13-8, scoring eight times in the final two innings.

This season, Maroth is 5-2 with a 3.56 earned run average in nine starts for the Tigers, who lead the majors with a 35-18 record.
