Frances Turning Florida Sports Upside Down

Posted: 11:52 am EDT September 5, 2004Updated: 7:58 am EDT September 6, 2004

The University of South Florida's scheduled football opener on Monday against the University of Pittsburgh has been postponed due to the uncertainty of weather caused by Hurricane Frances.

Both schools have mutually agreed to postpone the game that was scheduled for Monday to the weekend of December 3-4 at Raymond James Stadium.

"After consultation with the University of Pittsburgh, the Tampa Sports Authority and other area public safety officials, due to the uncertainty of the weather created by Hurricane Frances and the desire to provide a safe environment, we have decided to reschedule the game," said USF Director of Athletics Doug Woolard.

The hurricane has engulfed most of Florida, creating havoc with the weekend sports schedules.

Other football games postponed because of the storm included Florida's opener against Middle Tennessee State on Saturday, as well as Monday's blockbuster showdown between Florida State and Miami-Florida. The Florida/Middle Tennessee State game was pushed back to October, while Florida State and Miami-Florida will meet on Friday night.

In baseball, the entire series between the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins in Miami was postponed, while the final two games of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' series with the Detroit Tigers was postponed.
