Thrashers Score Seven Times In Rout Of Kings

Posted: 12:30 am EST November 14, 2009

(Sports Network) - Ilya Kovalchuk and Maxim Afinogenov both registered two goals and collected two assists, as the Atlanta Thrashers came away with a resounding 7-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Philips Arena.

Impressive rookie Evander Kane, the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, scored twice and set up another tally for the Thrashers, who have won three straight.

Nearly lost in Atlanta's offensive surge was goaltender Ondrej Pavelec, who made 38 saves.

"There was a little pressure on me. I didn't play in the last two games and we won so I needed to keep it up," Pavelec said. "We played great hockey for 60 minutes. I'm happy for (the shutout), but most important we got the two points."

Jonathan Quick started for Los Angeles and was pulled after yielding three goals on 14 shots. Erik Ersberg turned away just three of the seven shots he faced the rest of the way.

"They took advantage of some opportunities," said Kings head coach Terry Murray. "They have some explosive players, scored a couple of breakaway goals. They showed a killer instinct."

After a scoreless first period, the Thrashers blew the game open by scoring four times in a 5:04 span.

Kane got it started with a wraparound goal at 10:22, then Kovalchuk beat Quick on a breakaway at 12:28. Zach Bogosian lit the lamp at 14:16 and Afinogenov gave Atlanta a four-goal edge 70 seconds later.

Kovalchuk added a power-play marker six minutes into the third and Afinogenov's second tally made it 6-0 at 12:01. Kane tacked on a short-handed goal with 3:26 remaining.
