Anaheim, CA -- (Sports Network) - Victor Martinez's three-run homer in the ninth inning gave the Indians the lead, as Cleveland scored four times in the final frame to edge the Angels, 8-6, in the opener of a three-game set.Jhonny Peralta went 4-for-5 with three RBI and added a solo homer in the ninth for the Indians, who have won five in a row for their longest winning streak of the season. Peralta is 11-for-19 with 10 RBI in his last four games. Chris Gimenez and Kelly Shoppach both had two hits and an RBI in the win. Shin-Soo Choo went 4-for-4 and scored three times for Cleveland, which faced a lefty starter for the ninth straight time -- something the club hasn't done since 1919. Jose Veras (4-1) got the win after throwing two scoreless innings of relief. Kerry Wood tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his 14th save of the year. Carl Pavano lasted six frames and gave up six runs on 10 hits and didn't factor in the decision. Just before the game, the Indians sent first baseman Ryan Garko to San Francisco in exchange for minor league pitcher Scott Barnes. Kendry Morales had a pair of solo homers and Juan Rivera had two hits, a homer and ended with two RBI for the Angels, who have lost two in a row on the heels of a season-high eight-game winning streak. Mike Napoli had a solo homer and Bobby Abreu went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the setback. Joe Saunders lasted five innings and was touched for four runs on 10 hits. Brian Fuentes (1-3) took the loss after giving up all four runs in the ninth and failing to record an out. He had converted 17 consecutive save opportunities. "I thought I made good pitches and got some groundball outs when we needed them. They swung the bats well all night, what are you going to do? Brian (Fuentes) is human, he's been great for us," said Saunders. Morales' second homer of the game -- a leadoff shot to left in the sixth -- gave the Angels a 6-4 lead. Fuentes was on the mound trying to seal the deal for LA in the ninth, but gave up a leadoff single to Jamey Carroll. Choo followed suit before Martinez crushed the go-ahead homer over the fence in left. Peralta then added a shot to center and it was 8-6. "We made him (Fuentes) throw strikes, I took a chance and looked for a fastball and got it. We've been putting good swings on the ball...when you do that anything can happen," said Martinez. Wood tried to close it out in the home ninth, but Gary Matthews, Jr. led off with a double. Reggie Willits, though, flied out, Chone Figgins was caught looking at the third strike and Maicer Izturis flied out to end the game. The Indians took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, as Gimenez and Shoppach both hit RBI singles. Rivera, Morales and Napoli hit consecutive homers to start the home second, which gave the Tribe a 3-2 edge. Peralta's RBI double in the third knotted the game. Abreu had a two-out single in the bottom of the third, nabbed second base, moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed home to give the Halos the lead, 4-3, as Rivera singled to center. It was 5-4 after the fifth as Peralta and Abreu exchanged RBI singles in each half-inning. Game Notes It was Morales' second career multi-homer game...It was the third career four- hit game for both Peralta and Choo...It was the ninth time the Angels have hit back-to-back-to-back homers...Saunders is winless in his last six trips to the hill...The Angels won five of their nine meetings with the Indians a year ago...Indians relief pitcher Winston Abreu and manager Eric Wedge were suspended after an altercation with the Mariners on Saturday. Abreu was suspended for three games, while Wedge missed Monday's game. Bench coach Jeff Datz served as the manager.
