Oilers 5, Thrashers 1

Edmonton, AB -- (Sports Network) - Dwayne Roloson made 29 saves and the Edmonton Oilers scored five unanswered goals to beat the Atlanta Thrashers, 5-1, at Rexall Place.

Ryan Smyth, Marc-Andre Bergeron, Marc Pouliot, Joffrey Lupul and Raffi Torres all tallied for the Oilers, who have won two straight and four of their last six. Ales Hemsky and Petr Sykora each had a pair of helpers for Edmonton, which embarks on a season-high seven-game road trip starting Tuesday in Boston.

Eric Belanger had the lone tally for Atlanta, which has lost five of its last six overall. Belanger was acquired from the Nashville Predators on Friday, just one day after being traded from Carolina. The 6-0, 190-pound center earned 20 points (8G, 12A) in 56 games with the Hurricanes this season.

Johan Hedberg surrendered five goals on 32 shots faced for the Thrashers.

Atlanta got off to a quick start by netting the game's first score. Belanger got credit for the tally, redirecting a shot by Marian Hossa through the five-hole of Roloson for the 1-0 edge at 5:15.

Edmonton came right back to tie it, making quick work of a power play opportunity when Steve McCarthy was sent off for hooking. Toby Petersen rifled a shot from the point that was deflected by Sykora, causing a scramble in front of the crease. Horcoff spotted the puck and got it to Smyth, who wristed it over the skate of Hedberg at 9:40.

The Oilers rode the momentum into the second period, tallying three unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead.

The first came on Bergeron's tally at 7:33, as the defenseman went back and forth with Hemsky, who came off the side boards and dished back to Bergeron in the slot. His one-timer sailed past Hedberg on the glove side to give Edmonton a 2-1 edge.

Pouliot's marker increased the lead to 3-1 at 11:10, as he wristed a shot from the left circle that sailed through traffic and past a screened Hedberg on the blocker side.

A little more than a minute later, Lupul capped the flurry when he caught Hedberg out of position, wristing a shot off the back of the netminder's pad and over the goal line at 12:24.

Atlanta thought it had cut its deficit in half in the third, as Garnet Exelby's long slap shot got past Roloson at 8:12. Officials waved off the goal, though, because Eric Boulton had interfered with the netminder.

Torres made it a five-goal effort by cashing in on the power play with under five minutes to play. The left winger fought through a scramble in front of the net, sending a backhand shot over Hedberg with 4:22 left in the contest.
