Rearview Cameras Can Capture More Than You Think

Rearview cameras, the kind mounted on the backs of cars and SUVs, can save lives. But a Channel 2 Action News Investigation finds some of those cameras can also capture images from other wireless cameras. That includes images from video baby monitors and security cameras inside homes and businesses.

Sales of backup cameras, especially the kind that you install yourself, have soared in recent years following tragic stories of children being run over in their own driveways.

How secure is your security camera?

Images from inside a private nursery, a restaurant and an after-hours adult entertainment club were all captured by simply driving down the street.

“I think your viewers are going to be shocked by what they see can be picked up over the airways,” said Georgia State law professor Lyn Hogue.

Channel 2’s Tom Regan bought a $100 rearview camera from a local auto parts store, installed it on an SUV and rode around.

The images picked up by the wireless monitor that came with the backup camera amazed him.

What appeared to be the inside of a Hindu or Muslim worship service inside an office complex was seen. At another location, we could see two workers chatting inside. A ceiling security camera peering down at video poker machines in a local convenience store was shown. We also captured the view of another camera mounted on the back of a tow truck as it pulled a car.

But those were nothing compared to the images the monitor picked up from the outside of a lingerie modeling business. Women dressed in robes and skimpy bikinis greeted male customers and then ushered them into back rooms for private entertainment.

Regan said he noticed security cameras on the outside and then wondered if the women inside knew their hidden wireless cameras aren’t so hidden after all.

“A strip club dressing room…the cameras are there for the protection of the dancers, I would suspect,” said Hogue.

Hogue said images from wireless security cameras, however private, are not protected by privacy laws.

"The effect of these wireless transmitters, of course, is to take that which people may think is private and put it into a public place to be intercepted,” said Hogue.

Regan talked with a dancer and asked if the video is something she would want out there. She said, “Of course not.”

Video baby monitors offer parents peace of mind to watch their babies in their cribs. But again, there is no guarantee of privacy. As Channel 2 drove through several metro Atlanta neighborhoods, the rearview camera device picked up multiple images from baby monitors.

We showed the mother of a newborn, how easily someone driving by a home can lock onto images from video baby monitors.

“You’re in your baby’s room, so much is going on. You’re changing diapers and you’re breastfeeding,” said mother Amanda Hall. “It’s pretty scary (to think someone could look in)."

In our increasingly wireless world, convenience comes with a compromise. What happens behind closed doors can sometimes be available for all the world to see.

The company that made the backup camera Channel 2 bought told us it shouldn’t intercept or pick up other video signals if it’s installed properly. Click here for our baby monitor buying tip.
