Does Vegas Need More?

Updated: 10:13 a.m. EDT August 18, 2003 If you're heading to Vegas this fall, you won't lack things to do. Along with the already existing overload of entertainment options, here's a small sampling of a few of the new things scheduled to debut in the next couple of months. Hofbrauhaus -- If you're a fan of der Schnitzel, check out this $12 million beer garden and restaurant, a kin to the famous Hofbrauhaus in Munich, Germany. It will feature traditional Bavarian entrees and lots of that famous German beer in trademark mugs and steins. It is scheduled to open by late September and will be located at Harmon and Paradise roads, just across from the Hard Rock Hotel. Ice -- Located in the former home of the storied Drink, Ice is a 17,000-square-foot nightclub featuring a huge multistory dance floor and several themed ultra-lounges -- including one labeled the "Fur Room" for submitting to your fantasies, at least decoratively speaking. There are five full-service bars, food service, and a 4,000-square-foot cushioned Brazilian walnut dance space. Now open, the club is located at 200 E. Harmon at Koval, just behind the MGM Grand. Visit icelasvegas.com for more details. Mandalay Place -- The bridge between Mandalay Bay and Luxor has been under construction for the last few years, or so it seems, but now it is finally nearing completion. A collection of high-end stores and shops are due to open in October 2003. Mandalay Place will feature more than 30 retailers, plus at least one restaurant and a weekend "farmer's market." Margaritaville -- More than a year after it was announced, Jimmy Buffet's brainchild will finally open at the Flamingo Las Vegas. Located right along the Strip, Margaritaville will feature a multilevel restaurant, bar, and live-music venue. It is scheduled to open in October. Plush -– Since the city apparently doesn't have enough chic nightclubs, another will be added to the JW Marriott hotel in the northwest part of the city. It is taking the place of OXO, the Gustav Mahler steakhouse that closed awhile back. Plush is scheduled to open in September. Project X-Sky -– For those of you who think the idea of falling off the side of a 106-story building is cool, this new thrill ride at the Stratosphere will give you just such a sensation. Designed to resemble a giant teeter-totter, the ride will send people of questionable sanity in a floorless car up a 30-foot ramp that will then tilt and tip off the side of the tower. Not in 1 million years, say I, but if it sounds cool to you, visit projectxsky.com. The ride is scheduled to open in October. Sirens of TI -- The female pirates take over the hotel formerly known as Treasure Island with this updated version of the free pirate battle in front of the hotel. It will be choreographed by award-winning Kenny Ortega and reportedly features a mixture of live stunts, dancing, music and special effects. It is currently slated to debut at the end of October. Treasures -– Since the city apparently doesn't have enough strip clubs, either, this $30 million palace of excess will try to outdo the other strip clubs by throwing more money at the cause. It will be located on the other side of the Interstate 15 freeway from the Strip, near the Charleston Road exit. It is due to open in September. Westin Casuarina – Taking over the hotel once known as the Maxim, the Westin folks have thrown about $100 million at the place and will relaunch as an upscale boutique hotel with a small casino and spa. It's now scheduled to open in October, and you can get more information by clicking here. Zumanity -- The new Cirque du Soleil production at New York-New York is going to be open by the time you read this. Featuring semi-clad performers, several of whom will reportedly be wearing prosthetic, um, "enhancements," the new show will explore a sexier side of the circus, so to speak. In other words, if you've got kids, take them to "Mystere." For more information click here.
