ATLANTA -- Channel 2’s Pam Martin took you inside Zoo Atlanta for a closer look at Mei Lan, Atlanta's baby panda, with video of her birth and early weeks spent with mother Lun Lun. From the time the panda team assembled for Mei Lan’s arrival to her 36-hour delivery, the remarkable moment was captured on panda cam and given to Channel 2.“It’s a part of the tradition and fabric of Channel 2,” said Bill Hoffman, vice president and general manager of WSB-TV. “We’re proud to continue our 20 year partnership with Zoo Atlanta and to recognize and celebrate the great work of the zoo and its latest great ambassador, Mei Lan.”Channel 2 first traveled with Zoo Atlanta to China in 1999 and produced "Georgia's Panda Project," a documentary covering the shared scientific research between two countries and the transfer of Lun Lun and Yang Yang to North Georgia.“Going to China to document the panda story, from where they live in the wild to the Chinese government’s ongoing research to save this endangered species, was the story of a lifetime,” said Pam Martin, anchor for Channel 2 Action News This Morning. “Now, telling the story of Mei Lan’s birth completes the cycle and gives us a unique opportunity to get reacquainted with the research and care devoted to this very rare birth in captivity. I’m so excited that we can share this jewel of a story with Atlanta.”Local viewers will get a once in a lifetime chance to see Mei Lan before she made her public debut, and an opportunity to see the panda family up close, before they return to China for good."This primetime special has been nearly 10 years in the making. We love being a part of projects like this when they directly affect our local community," said Art Rogers, Channel 2 Director of Programming. "Viewers will see the progress of our city's wonderful pandas through this inside look at a miracle of modern research and science."
