  • Isakson, who won his Senate seat in 2004, has been widely rumored as a top GOP gubernatorial candidate to succeed Republican Governor Sonny Perdue when Perdue's final term expires in 2010.

Isakson's spokeswoman, Joan Kirchner, said Isakson considered the idea but has decided he wants to remain in the Senate.

InsiderAdvantageGeorgia.com is reporting that, "As many as six elected officials are either actively engaged in or considering running for governor in the wake of Sen. Johnny Isakson’s announcement Thursday."

Among those reportedly considering the race are Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, Secretary of State Karen Handel, Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine (who already has announced), U.S. Reps. Jack Kinston and Lynn Westmoreland and a prominent state House member, according to InsiderAdvantageGeorgia.com.
