So, you've decided to adopt a bird. There are several different ways to find your family's new addition. You can either go to a professional breeder (someone who sells more than 30 birds each year), a hobbyist (someone who breeds and sells less than 30 each year, or a commercial pet shop.According to Winged Wisdom Pet Bird Magazine, there are several questions you need to ask no matter where you go to get your bird.Checkfor proper licensing and permit requirements necessary for the location. Visually inspect store for cleanliness and disease-free animals, any they may carry. Are the babies handfed, or parent-raised? Ask for a health guarantee, or well-check from an avian veterinarian. Ongoing after-sale support for the life of the bird? Are references made available? How long in business; long-term business and services, or fly-by-nights? Are they expert and experienced in aviculture? Do they have only certain species, or have access to varied species and breeders?Winged Wisdom also suggests calling references. Having a pet bird companion can be enjoyable and fulfilling, but be sure to start out the right way so your relationship will soar.
