National Hockey League Game Capsules

Monday, October 13, 2008

(Sports Network) - Dustin Penner's tip-in with 5.4 seconds remaining in regulation gave the Edmonton Oilers a 3-2 season-opening win over the Colorado Avalanche at Rexall Place. Penner gave Edmonton the lead early in the third in a two-goal performance while Shawn Horcoff notched a first period power-play tally for the Oilers, who got stellar goaltending from Mathieu Garon. The netminder was brilliant in stopping all but two of Colorado's 33 shots. Joe Sakic lit the lamp in the second and Milan Hejduk tied the game midway through the third on a penalty shot for Colorado, which saw Peter Budaj take the loss in facing 19 shots.

Final Score: Phoenix 4, Anaheim 2

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Shane Doan scored his first two goals of the season as the Phoenix Coyotes netted a 4-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center. Mikkel Boedker, the eighth overall pick of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, tallied his first career goal in the first period for the Coyotes, winners of their first two games. Kyle Turris, who was the team's first- round pick in 2007, scored the other goal and assisted on another, and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 33- of-35 shots to pick up the win. Ryan Carter and George Parros each scored for the Ducks, who have dropped their first two games of the season. Chris Pronger tallied an assist, and Jean-Sebastian Giguere allowed four goals on 24 shots in taking the loss in Anaheim's home opener.

Final Score: San Jose 1, Los Angeles 0

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Brian Boucher stopped 21 shots for his 15th career shutout, and Lukas Kaspar scored his first NHL goal as San Jose earned a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings to complete a home-and-home sweep. The Sharks have won their first three games of the season. Jason LaBarbera made 18 saves in the home opener for the Kings, but Los Angeles was hurt by missed opportunities and a pair of disallowed goals.
