Damage reported after strong storms move through north Georgia

After several inches of rain fell throughout north Georgia and metro Atlanta on Saturday, the threat of severe weather has ended.

"Thunderstorms brought damaging wind and hail to parts of the area as well," Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

After spending part of the afternoon under a tornado warning, Coweta County experienced significant damage. Coweta County Emergency Management said 10 homes were damaged on Saturday by wind and rain near the area of Martin Mill and Gordon roads.Trees and wires were also downed by the storm, but no injuries have been reported.

A viewer submitted photos of a downed large oak tree in their East Lake back yard, which damaged a fence.

In DeKalb County, a Stone Mountain resident had several inches of raw sewage back up into his basement after the South Indian Creek flooded.

Small hail was reported throughout north Georgia, including in Grant Park, where Channel 2 Action News reporter Richard Elliot captured video of pea-sized hail Saturday morning.

Georgia Power spokesman John Kraft said 6,600 homes and businesses were without power across the state as of 1 p.m., but that number dropped to 4,000 by 4 p.m.

"Clouds will break through the late afternoon and evening allowing the temperature to warm into the 60s," Nitz said.

"Sunday will bring cooler temperatures and cloudy skies, but only a 20 percent chance of rain late in the day," Nitz said. "Strong and potentially severe storms are back in the forecast for Monday morning."
