Cloudy skies and rain threaten to dampen the holiday weekend starting with heavy showers that will linger for at least another day.

Rain fell across the metro Atlanta area on Wednesday with more showers expected on Thursday.There were several reports of minor street flooding, and one incident in DeKalb County where a cab driver had to climb out of  a van when the front of the vehicle became submerged. The man told Channel 2's Erica Byfield that he was driving and a wall of water pushed him to the side of the road.

Stormtracker 2 HD showed a line of heavy rain extending from the southwest metro Atlanta counties to Gainesville that moved across the state quickly on Wednesday afternoon.

“After a wet day that brought about an inch of rainfall we have some dry hours ahead overnight. Under cloudy skies we’re headed to lows in the upper 50s. An approaching cold front will bring another round of rain tomorrow, heavy at times,” said Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz.

“We’re looking at a high of 70 degrees for Thursday, the first day of winter. Seventy degrees is the record high for Dec. 22 set back in 1889,” Nitz said.

Temperatures will fall into the 50s by the weekend with some lingering showers, Nitz said. Low temperatures will remain well above freezing ruining any chance of a white Christmas in metro Atlanta.
