Atlanta heat to reach 100+ this weekend

ATLANTA —

Metro Atlanta is expected to see triple-digit heat this weekend for the first time in nearly five years.

The five-day forecast puts temperatures at a high of 100 on Friday, 102 on Saturday and 100 on Sunday. The record high for Saturday’s date is 98. The record for Sunday’s date is 99.

Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said temperatures in metro Atlanta have not gotten past 99 since August 2007.

“That month Atlanta reached 100 or higher nine times, culminating with 104 on August 22.  So it has been five years since Atlanta has reached 100,” Minton said.

Minton said a break in the heat is not expected until July 4, when temperatures are forecasted  to drop back into the 90s.

Minton suggested, if you must be outside, to pack a cooler and layer the ice with hand towels to be used for a quick cool-down. Do not forget to keep pets in a cool place with plenty of water.

Atlanta is also under a code orange smog alert.
