Water main break closes Sandy Springs road

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — A Sandy Springs road is closed Friday after a water main break caused a sinkhole at the street's edge.

City spokeswoman Sharon Kraun said Long Island Drive is compromised due to the sinkhole and it has been closed from Mitchell to Glen Errol roads.

Channel 2's Linda Stouffer said the broken water main is gushing into storm drains.

The fire department said the sinkhole is approximately 4 feet deep, but they are concerned about further collapse.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., officials with Atlanta Watershed said water service had been restored to homes in the area. They said permanent road repairs will begin Saturday, but a patch will remain on the road overnight.
