2 arrested in widespread 'buddy pass' scheme

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Police have arrested two of three people suspected of running an online scam selling fake "buddy pass" tickets for Delta Air Lines.

Channel 2's Tony Thomas learned the victims could see the online reservation under their names but tickets were not really there.

Thomas learned victims were scammed out of hundreds of dollars and police believe there could be more.

A victim, who doesn't want her name used, told Thomas she lured the two suspects to a salon telling them she'd be giving them cash for the bogus tickets.

"Me and my husband decided the same way they scammed us was the same way we were going to get them."

The victim took cellphone video as Gwinnett police arrived to arrest the suspects.

Detectives told Thomas they believe there could be dozens of victims of Nicholas Gates and his girlfriend, Teisha Dunbar. Police said the two placed ads on the internet claiming they were selling low-priced Delta tickets. They even provided confirmation numbers.

"So, you go on Delta website, my name, my children's name, my mother's name. All eight tickets were on there. I'm thinking life is great, this is awesome," the victim said.

That was her thought until she called Delta to arrange for a wheelchair and was told no one had ever paid for her tickets.

"The confession was that the male used his phone to set up all these purchases. They were just trying to get peoples money," said Detective Nermin Cultarevic with the Gwinnett County police department.

Thomas was there Sunday as the DeKalb County pair made their first court appearances. Police said they've found some victims online but want others to come forward.

"I'm kind of a dust-it-off type person but not everybody can dust it off and I just didn't want anyone else to feel the violation of being scammed by somebody," the victim said. "I was really looking forward to the trip."
