According to WCAX and The Associated Press, Vermont State Police arrested Stephanie Gero, 28, and Matthew Cushing, 36, both of Swanton, on charges of child cruelty resulting in death after their baby boy, Leo, suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage Aug. 1. Gero also faces a charge of aggravated domestic assault, the news outlets reported.
Investigators believe Gero, who was not supposed to have unsupervised contact with the child, injured Leo before he died, according to the news outlets. Cushing, who knew about the restrictions on Gero’s contact with Leo, was showering at the time, police said.
Gero, who is being held on $25,000 bail, will be arraigned Thursday, the AP reported. Cushing, who was released after his arrest Wednesday, is due in court Dec. 22, according to the news agency.
