Michigan woman holds fatal stabbing suspect at gunpoint

ADRIAN, Mich. — A Michigan man is accused of fatally stabbing an 85-year-old man on Wednesday at a grocery store, authorities said. The alleged assailant was held at gunpoint by a woman who witnessed the attack until police arrived, the Daily Telegram reported.

Alarick John Guajardo, 29, of Adrian, was charged with one count of open murder, one count of carrying a concealed weapon and one count of carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, the Adrian Police Department said in a news release.

Guajardo remains in custody at the Lenawee County Jail, pending an arraignment Friday in Lenawee County District Court, the Daily Telegram reported.

Guajardo is accused of stabbing Glen Harold Meyers, who sustained multiple stab wounds to the head and neck and was pronounced dead at the scene, WTOL reported.

The incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. inside a Meijers store in Adrian, the television station reported.

According to Adrian Police Chief Vincent Emrick, Guajardo was unable to flee the scene when a woman, who owns a concealed pistol license, ordered him to the ground until police arrived, the Daily Telegram reported.

Phil Wadsworth, a retired Michigan Department of Corrections Officer, told WTOL he believes the woman did the right thing.

“You really aren’t obligated under Michigan law to do so. It’s wonderful that she did," Wadsworth told the television station. "I think the world of her because there’s a lot of people who would’ve just stood back to be a good witness.

"She never had to fire her firearm, which was good. The perpetrator complied so basically the mere presence of that firearm and directing it toward him stopped the threat.”

Emrick said there were no other victims and that store employees were cooperating with authorities.

“This is an unthinkable incident, and we’re all adapting as best we can and they’ve been very cooperative," Emrick told the Daily Telegram.
