Texas 7th-grader dies days after fight outside Houston middle school

HOUSTON — A Texas girl has died less than a week after a group of teens attacked her one block away from her Houston middle school, the girl's mother said.

According to KTRK-TV, Attucks Middle School seventh-grader Kashala Francis, 13, died Wednesday, days after she was kicked in the head during the April 18 fight that was captured on video, said Mamie Jackson, Kashala's mother.

On Sunday, Kashala told family members that her head hurt before lying down and falling unconscious, her mother told the news station. The girl was taken to Texas Children's Hospital, where doctors discovered "a large tumor in the back of her head" and "fluid buildup in her brain," Jackson said. Kashala's family had not been aware of the tumor beforehand, KTRK reported.

Kashala fell into a coma and died at the hospital, ABC News reported.

Houston police said they are investigating the death but haven't filed any charges yet. Officials don't know whether the fight led to her death but are awaiting autopsy results.

Meanwhile, the Houston Independent School District issued a statement saying it was aware of the "off-campus altercation" and is investigating and cooperating with police.

Jackson told KTRK that she believes she would have had more time with her daughter if the fight hadn't occurred.

"It's not fair," said Jackson, who saw a video of the attack. "She did not deserve that. She kept saying 'Stop.' She didn't even wanna fight, but they kept going."
