'Supposedly I'm dead': Woman confused to find her face on funeral donation jars

SHAFTER, Calif. — A California woman is trying to figure out who snagged one of her photos off Facebook and put it onto funeral donation jars found around the Bakersfield area.

"Supposedly I'm dead," Lupita Gonzalez told Bakersfield Now. "But I'm not. I'm alive."

Gonzalez said her mother fielded calls from relatives over the weekend who wondered why she didn't tell them about Gonzalez's death. The relatives said they spotted Gonzalez's face on jars placed in at least three convenience stores in Shafter that solicited donations for funeral expenses.

In reality, someone apparently grabbed one of Gonzalez's photos off of Facebook, printed it in black-and-white on plain white paper and taped it around a large, empty jar.

"We are asking for help for donations for Enriquetta Nunez," said a note written in Spanish on the back of the jar. The author claimed that Nunez died and her family needed funds to bring her body back to Mexico, Bakersfield Now reported.

It's unclear whether Enriquetta Nunez is a real person.

"It's not right what (the person who put out the jars) is doing." Gonzalez told Bakersfield Now. "I mean, I just – I don't like it at all."

Police are investigating to determine who made the jars.

Gonzalez said she was able to recover at least two of the jars. They held about $15 in donations, which she told Bakersfield Now would go toward her church.
