Police officer narrowly misses being hit by vehicle

MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A police officer’s quick thinking and equally quick feet helped him avoid being hit by a passing car while investigating an accident involving a deer earlier in the month.

Manchester Township Officer Kyle Rickvalsky was walking back to his patrol car, which had its emergency flashers on, when he saw a car heading toward him.

"With some quick thinking and ninja-like reflexes, Patrolman Rickvalsky was able to dive and roll out of the way of a vehicle that failed to move over," Manchester police wrote on Facebook.

🚨🚔🚨DASHCAM CATCHES NEAR COLLISION WITH POLICE OFFICER AND VEHICLE🚨🚔🚨 Earlier in the month, Ptl. Kyle Rickvalsky was investigating an accident which involved a struck deer, which most of you know is common for good ole’ Manchester Township. His patrol vehicle was pulled to the side of the roadway with his rear emergency lights on. With his emergency lights shining as bright as the upcoming holiday lights, he observed a vehicle start to approach the passenger side of his patrol vehicle. As Ptl. Rickvaslky approached the driver side of his patrol vehicle, the oncoming vehicle quickly swerved to avoid colliding with his patrol vehicle, but was heading straight towards him! With some quick thinking and ninja-like reflexes, Ptl. Rickvalsky was able to dive and roll out of the way of a vehicle that failed to move over! Without hesitation, Ptl. Rickvalsky was able to relay the incident to dispatch. The vehicle was stopped shortly after and the driver was issued the appropriate violation. We are thankful that Ptl. Rickvalsky was able to walk away from this incident with only a few scrapes. We would like to remind our residents it's the LAW (NJ Title 39:4-92.2) that when you see flashing lights on the side of the road, slow down, and if it’s safe, MOVE OVER! – away from police, fire crews, paramedics and tow truck drivers. Rickvalsky relayed the incident to dispatch, and the vehicle was stopped shortly after and the driver was issued a citation.

The state's Move Over law requires drivers to slow down and, if safe, move to another lane when approaching emergency vehicles, tow trucks and maintenance vehicles with flashing lights on.
