Neighbors rescue deer with plastic pumpkin stuck on its head

ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — For four days residents called in sightings of a deer with a plastic pumpkin stuck on its head.

Just before sunset Sunday, a group of people who had been tracking the doe throughout the weekend, snared it with catch poles. They were able to remove the bucket from its head and safely release it, according to WCPO.

"Despite the danger, these determined residents were able to converge on the deer after following it up and down hills for many hours," Daryl Meyerrenke, owner of Anderson Township Family Pet Center who was getting calls from residents about the deer sightings, told WCPO.

The black strap on the pumpkin had gotten stuck behind the deer's head, according to WXIX. As soon as the deer was free, she ran to a creek, and started drinking and grazing.

Meyerrenke is now fundraising for Second Chance Wildlife, an animal rescue nonprofit that helped with the search, using a donation bucket -- the pumpkin removed from the deer's head.
