"We were able to raise funds to purchase 5.3 million worth of debt in the city of Chicago and Cook County," Dr. Otis Moss III of Trinity United Church of Christ said in an announcement to churchgoers Sunday, WGN reported.

According to WGN, the $38,000 raised was enough to wipe out the $5.3 million in debt.

"They will receive a very special card before Thanksgiving -- completely anonymous," Moss said. "They don't know this is coming. The card will simply say, 'Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. We want you to know all your debts have been forgiven."
