After 6 months on the lam, man suspected in crowbar attack smiles for mugshot

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Six months after allegedly attacking a man with a crowbar, a New Mexico assault suspect has been arrested - and smiled for his booking photo.

Kristian Anderson tells told local media that in May, he was leaving a northeast Albuquerque park with his family when a man attacked him with a crowbar. Anderson lost an eye in the attack, which was apparently random.

KQRE-TV reported the suspect, 31-year-old Michael Chavez, evaded authorities for months until police arrested him last week. Chavez is charged with aggravated battery with great bodily harm. 
Chavez can be seen smiling in his booking photo.

Anderson, however, isn't smiling. He told KQRE-TV he wants the public to know how dangerous Chavez is.

"With this irate thinking and whatever ... just violence that he has. I don't want to see it happen to another family," he said.

Chavez appeared in court for the first time Thursday. The state filed a pretrial detention motion that will be heard by a district court judge.
