Thousands Attend Slain Officer's Funeral

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Family, friends and fellow officers will come together to mourn the death of a Chattahoochee Hills officer killed in the line of duty.

The funeral for the fallen officer will be Saturday at noon at the First Baptist Church of Atlanta at 4400 N. Peachtree Road. Burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs.

Thousands of fellow police officers from across the state are expected to attend the funeral. The motorcade from the church to the cemetery will consist of up to 1,000 cars and could take an hour to make the trip.

A SWAT team took Robert Cook, 44, into custody Wednesday afternoon at a home in Fairburn, a few miles from where the shooting happened. Channel 2 Action News reporter Richard Elliot questioned Cook as he was being put in the back of a patrol car. Cook told Elliot that he was "sorry for the officer's family." Cook was taken to the Fulton County Jail.

At a news conference Feb. 17, Chattahoochee Hills police Chief Damon Jones said Cook was interviewed by GBI agents. Authorities also said they recovered a vehicle and a weapon. They said that weapon was analyzed at the GBI crime lab.

Vogt was shot and killed Feb. 15 with a high-powered weapon as he drove along Vernon Grove Road in south Fulton County, according to police. Jones told Elliot that Vogt was driving down a dirt road in his squad car Monday afternoon when he noticed a man urinating alongside the road so Vogt stopped to investigate. Authorities said Cook already had an outstanding warrant and didn't want to go back to jail, so he opened fire on Vogt.

After the attack, authorities posted a $35,000 reward in the case and announced that they were searching for a 1983 Chrysler LeBaron. Authorities said the vehicle that they recovered is not a LeBaron, but similar in design.

Vogt was a veteran officer, having worked some 20 years with various agencies in and around south Fulton County. Before going to work for Chattahoochee Hills, the county's newest city, Vogt worked as a reserve officer for the Union City police.

Dash-cam video shows the two have met before last March when Vogt arrested Cook for driving without a license.

Friends said Vogt was also raising his 13-year-old grandchild because his daughter died during childbirth.
