Teen killed leaving school bus

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga.,None — The Douglas County Sheriff's Department is investigating a deadly crash that killed a teen getting off a school bus.

Sheriff Phil Miller confirmed Brandy Hart, 17, of Douglasville, was struck by a car and killed when getting off a school bus along Cedar Mountain Road at Dorris Road at about 7 p.m. Tuesday. Miller said Hart was returning home from an after-school event.

The Georgia State Patrol said the bus' red lights were activated at the time of the incident.

Investigators said witnesses tried unsuccessfully to help Hart after the crash. She was taken to WellStar Hospital in Douglasville, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Hart is Shirley Barker McManners, 51, from Douglasville. GSP said alcohol has been ruled out as a factor in the incident.

GSP and the Douglas County Sheriff's Department continue to investigate. Charges are pending based on the findings of the investigation.

"It could be a terrible accident, or it could be a criminal case. It's too early to tell at this point," Douglas County Sheriff's Capt. Bobby Holmes told Channel 2's George Howell.
