MARIETTA, Ga. —
The final Thursday Night Sports Zone Game of the Week featured a great finish, as Etowah held off Lassiter 17-14 to secure the third seed in Region 5 AAAAA.
The visiting Eagles cracked the scoreboard in the first quarter, as quarterback John Oliver sneaked in from one yard out to give Etowah a 7-0 lead, a lead the Eagles would maintain at halftime.
The Eagles added to their lead with a touchdown just 1:41 into the third quarter, as Oliver found Barrett Burns for a 7-yard score and a 14-0 advantage.
But the Trojans fought back moments later, as quarterback Eddie Prinz hit Willie Police on third-and-goal to cut the Eagles lead in half at 14-7.
However, Etowah would pad its cushion with a field goal by Ryan Hopper with only one second remaining in the third quarter, so the Eagles took a 17-7 lead into the fourth.
With just over five minutes remaining, Prinz hit a streaking Juwan Dickey on a fade route for a 30-yard touchdown. That brought the home team within a field goal at 17-14.
Etowah looked to run down the clock from that point, but back in punt formation, standing inside his 20, Hopper mishandled the snap and was tackled at the Etowah 17-yard line.
Seven plays later, on fourth-and-goal, the Trojans chose to go for the touchdown and the win instead of a field goal that would have sent the game into overtime.
Prinz was stuffed after mishandling the snap from center, and the Eagles celebrated the 3-point victory and the third seed in the region playoffs.
Lassiter had also already qualified for the playoffs.
