ATLANTA —

Falcons fans attending Thursday night’s preseason game got a first look at the new security measures that will be in place for games this season.

Georgia Dome officials would not go into detail about all of the changes, but some were apparent.

Unlike previous years, all guests heading into the game were wanded with a metal detector.

The Green family expected to walk right into the Falcons' first preseason game of 2012, but they were met by a wall of people. A late-arriving crowd and new security measure contributed to the longer lines.

“It’s 7:41 and we’re in line. We missed the kickoff,” Lucretia Green said.

As longtime ticket holders, the Greens said they have seen quite a few changes in security over the years.

“They hold us back from coming in, searching, security under your car,” Lucretia Green said.

Fans seemed to take the latest changes in stride. Georgia Dome officials said the changes are permanent.

“None of this is prompted by any specific threats. The NFL has security audits around the nation for every event,” Jason Kirksey with the Georgia Dome said.

The Falcons have been warning fans of potentially long lines, even during the preseason.

For the first hour gates are open, the average wait time is three minutes, but it goes up as the game gets closer.
