See amazing sports photography for free in Piedmont Park

ATLANTA — When Red Bull hosts a photography show, one thing is for certain: this ain't your mama's photography show.

The Red Bull Illume located inside Piedmont Park at the Charles Allen Gates kicked off Thursday with a couple skydivers invading the park. From there, attendees were hit with some of the most amazing sports photography in the world.

"Everything is dark in the park and you're being illuminated by these images," photographer Zak Noyle told wsbtv.com's Nelson Hicks. "Fifty different images, 25 boxes, 50 images front and back, and you're looking at these people and they're hit by these colors coming off of these images. To see that is such a neat way to view imagery in such a beautiful venue out at this park."

Noyle was one of 6,000 photographers who submitted mroe than 28,000 images into the contest. The best 50 ended up in the Red Bull Illume, inside light boxes that are now on display in the park through March 30.

Noyle's image won the sequence category.

"I saw this surfer out there attempting to do a back flip," Noyle said. "And I had my cameras and instead of shooting it very tight like all of the other photographers in the area, I wanted to put the viewer there. And so I have a little bit of the water rushing up on the beach and the sand and everything, and it's a guy doing a back flip and it's put into one image."

If seeing these images blown up into light boxes isn't incentive enough, throw in a vibrant crowd and no admission fee, and it has all the ingredients of a pretty awesome night out.

It's open daily from about 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
