Jury summons sent out again for Ross Harris hot car death trial

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. — Court officials in Brunswick are working to find jurors for the Ross Harris case.

Earlier this year, a judge moved the trial five hours away to find jurors who did not already believe Harris killed his son by leaving him in a hot SUV for hours in June 2014.

"I'm sure everyone in this case hopes it makes a big difference,” defense attorney Scott Semrau said.

Semrau told Channel 2’s Ross Cavitt that 327 miles isn't as far away as it used to be, at least when it comes to pretrial publicity.

‘We're just going to have to wait and see,” he said.

Lawyers tried for three weeks to find jurors in Cobb County to hear the case against Harris, accused of murder and other charges surrounding the death of his son Cooper. %

Court officials in Glynn County plan to send out between 200 and 250 jury summons for the case. That’s 100 jurors less than they called in Cobb County earlier this year.

Based on scheduling it appears jurors will not be individually interviewed like they were in Cobb County. Semrau believes the defense would prefer one-on-one questioning.

“Gives you the opportunity to interact individually with jurors and gives you the opportunity to start sharing your theory of the case with the jurors,” he said.

Moving a trial is always seen as more difficult for the defense, since prosecutors can often rely on help from the local district attorney’s office, but Semrau believes Harris' legal team felt like it had no choice.

“I think ultimately, though, the defense just wants a fair trial. They want jurors who haven't already made up their mind and want jurors who have not been influenced by false or inaccurate information,” Semrau said.

Jury selection is set for Sept. 12 in Brunswick.
