Hot car death trial postponed as hurricane cleanup continues

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. — The trial of a Cobb County man accused of intentionally leaving his son inside a hot car to die will resume Tuesday.

Ross Harris is on trial for the death of his 22-month-old son, Cooper, on June 18, 2014.

The trial was moved earlier this year from Cobb County to Brunswick, Georgia, to find an impartial jury.

HOT CAR DEATH TRIAL:

The trial began Oct. 3.

Lawyers made it through opening statements and a handful of witnesses before the trial was postponed because of Hurricane Matthew.

Judge Mary Staley on Wednesday canceled court Thursday and Friday as Matthew moved toward the U.S. The trial was scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. Monday.

Matthew hit just off the coast of Brunswick Friday evening. The hurricane left a trail of damage, including flooding and downed trees, which left many people without power. %

The area was not hit as hard as originally anticipated.

"The damage really is remarkably minimal relative to what could have happened," Sen. David Perdue said.

HURRICANE MATTHEW:

As crews work to restore power and clean up the area, some parts of Glynn County, including St. Simons Island, are just starting to reopen.

Officials decided to keep the court closed on Monday. The trial is now scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
