Probation officer killed in training accident

JACKSON, Ga.,None — A probation officer was killed in a training accident at a prison in Butts County on Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

It happened at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison Training Facility in Jackson.

A spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Corrections said there was an accidental discharge of a weapon during a routine training exercise.

The incident resulted in the death of a probation officer, the spokeswoman said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

"The department extends it's deepest condolences to the family of the fallen officer during this extremely difficult time," the spokeswoman said.

The officer's name has not been released.
