Georgia Republican party to send 31 delegates to national convention

AUGUSTA, Ga. — More than 30 delegates from Georgia will head to the Republican National Convention in July. Thousands wrapped up the state convention with a strong message from Gov. Nathan Deal.

A large crowd with strong opinions made for a lively Georgia Republican Convention. The most anticipated issue was a resolution that criticized Deal for his vetoes of the religious freedom and campus carry bills.

Derrick Grayson from DeKalb County came to the convention to speak against state party leadership over education.

"These same people in here protected Nathan Deal and Johnny Isackson who helped give us common core in the first place," Grayson said.

The convention crowd also voted to send 31 delegates to the national convention in Cleveland.

A last-ditch effort to get Sen. Ted Cruz supporters on the delegate list picked up some support, but not enough.

Michael McNeely, one of the selected delegates, says state Republicans need to unite despite reservations some may have about the party's presumptive nominee, Donald Trump.

"This is our nominee, and we're going to come together and face off with the Democrats in November," McNeely said.
